Service PlazaThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded an assistance grant to the Maine Turnpike Authority, providing funding under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 for a TSE project. The project included the construction of 30 electrified parking spaces at the West Gardiner, Maine service plaza. Truckers traveling the I-95 corridor are now able to take Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandated rest periods using plaza-provided heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and auxiliary power instead of running their diesel-burning engines.

Benefits of Electrification

TSE trucksAvailability of TSE in this location is an important link in a chain of TSE facilities between the Canadian Maritimes and Florida. Depending on the price of diesel fuel truckers will likely save $20 per 10-hour stopover, and annual emissions will be reduced by about 1.3 tons for particulate matter, 48 tons for nitrogen oxides, 11 tons for hydrocarbons, and 2,000 tons for carbon dioxide. Jobs in the manufacturing and construction sectors will be supported through the site preparation and installation of equipment. Long term environmental, public health, and economic benefits will result from direct investment in diesel emissions reduction and increased fuel efficiency in the freight transportation sector.
