Southern Toll Plaza Replacement Project

Conley-Estes Letter 10/09/08 (.3MB PDF)

Built in 1969, the existing York Toll Plaza has a number of safety and operational deficiencies that have been magnified with its age and the enormous increase in traffic volumes over nearly four decades. In 1969, the plaza handled less than 5 million vehicles per year. Last year, the plaza handled more than 16 million vehicles.

The site selection process began more than a year ago with an engineering survey of the entire stretch of highway from mile marker 3 in Kittery to mile marker 19 in Wells. The survey sought to identify any and all sites that could accommodate the footprint of the proposed toll plaza. That initial screening produced 16 potential sites.

The Maine Turnpike Authority has worked through the initial phase of the project to pare down the 16 potential sites to 4 preferred sites. Informational meetings and future public hearings on the project will continue over the next 3-months as the site selection process narrows the options down to one, candidate site.

Once the preferred site is selected, State and federal environmental permits will need to be secured. This phase of the project schedule will require at least one year of research, study and review before all of the necessary permitting criteria can be satisfied. There will be additional public meetings scheduled as this process moves forward.

A project description and maps of the 4 preferred sites can be viewed in the Southern Toll Plaza Fact Sheet below.
